Throughout the past few decades, educational research has unpacked new knowledge and a better understanding of child development and how young children learn. Children are naturally curious, explorers who question, experiment and create. The Primary Years Programme (PYP) at the Overseas School of Colombo (OSC) takes advantage of this, encouraging children from Early Years to Grade 5 (Ages 3 - 11) to develop an independent love and joy for learning. OSC was first awarded PYP authorization in 2002, and the school has since been committed to continuous improvement, delivering an engaging holistic Primary Years programne.

The PYP is an international curricular framework designed to foster the development of the whole child through teaching and learning that is integrated throughout all subject areas. The approach of teaching the PYP is through child centered, active inquiry, whereby, the focus of learning is on conceptual understandings that can be applied to real life situations.
