GENERAL INFORMATION

SCHOOL YEAR START DATES

  • First semester starts in August.
  • Second semester starts in January.

EARLY YEARS ADMISSIONS

Students must be at least three years of age on or before 31 August of the academic year of entrance for admission to the Pre-School.

GRADE PLACEMENT

Admission is granted to a student when it has been determined that the school has a vacancy and an appropriate program to meet his/her individual needs. The final determination of grade placement will be made by the Head of School.

This placement will reflect the student’s previous educational experience, age, maturity, linguistic proficiency and academic needs. In certain circumstances, students will be placed in a lower grade level to meet their educational needs.

For a student to be placed in a grade higher than the minimum age indicated, clearly demonstrable superior academic and physical maturity, coupled with social maturity must exist and be judged so by the OSC. Such advanced placement may only be given under exceptional circumstances and with the written approval of the Head of School.

Applications for Grades 11 and 12 will be assessed prior to acceptance in order to judge their linguistic and academic suitability for the International Baccalaureate Programme. In normal circumstance, students applying for admission to Grade 12 should be aged less than 20 on 1 September.

Class size policy

In the Preschool, the school aims for a target of 15 students with a teacher and assistant teacher in each class. This number may increase to 20 at the discretion of the Head of School after consultation with the Primary Principal

From Kindergarten through to Grade 12, the school aims for a target of 20 students. This number may increase to 24 at the discretion of the Head of School in consultation with the relevant Principal.

In Grades 1 through 5 and in single classes in Grades 6 through 10, when numbers exceed the stated class size policy, students will be placed on a priority waiting list and notified when a place becomes available. In such cases, the school will attempt to employ a suitably qualified support teacher but when this is not possible, the waiting list will be enforced.

Any IB Diploma or Certificate class, once started, will be allowed to run for the two-year course, regardless of enrolment, to permit students to complete the course of study.

Special education needs

OSC does not undertake to provide for all specialized educational needs such as severe learning difficulties or job-specific vocational training. Mild special educational needs may be provided for from Pre-School to Grade 8 depending on the level of service required. In the Secondary School (Grades 9-12), the courses are essentially college-preparatory and with a demanding academic emphasis. Support for students with learning disabilities at this level is very limited.

English Language Development

English is the teaching medium in the school and there is an expectation that students have, or will acquire, a satisfactory standard of English. The school maintains an EAL support program throughout the Primary and Middle School with limited support thereafter.

Admission into the IB Diploma Programme requires a high level of proficiency in academic English. Students entering the program should have achieved ‘proficient’ status before the start of grade 11. For students entering in grades 9 or 10, the English level should be sufficient to allow for preparedness by the time the student reaches grade 11. Hence, students seeking admission to grades 9 or 10 should have attained an ‘intermediate’ level. Students in grade 8 and younger may be considered for admission with ‘limited’ English levels.

OSC Graduation Requirements

New Requirements as of December 2017 applied to current Grade 12 class onwards. The OSC high school diploma is based on the successful completion of the following requirements in grades 9-12. The minimum passing level is a course grade of 3. Each course unit length is 1 year.

OSC High School Diploma Requirements

  • 4 Units in English
  • 4 Units in Individuals and Societies
  • 3 Units in Science (recommended 4)
  • 3 Units in Mathematics (recommended 4)
  • 2 Units in a language other than English
  • 2 Units in the Arts
  • 2 Units of Creativity, Activity and Service while in grades 11 and 12
  • 2 Units of PE
  • 2 additional units of a student’s choice
  • Satisfactory completion of the TOK programme

Diploma with Distinction

This includes the requirements above and in addition:

  • An average grade of 5.0 or higher in grades 11 and 12
  • Submission of the Extended Essay
  • Submission of the TOK Essay
  • At least 2 of the courses listed above to be taken at Higher Level
  • An additional 2 years of a language other than English

All courses at OSC are drawn from the IB programme, students only aiming for High School graduation may opt to take in school final examinations rather than sit for IB certification.

Units are awarded upon successful completion of a course with satisfactory (above 85%) attendance.

In Grades 11 and 12 students must enroll in a programme with a minimum of 5 academic courses.

If a student is transferring to OSC, previous credits would be reviewed to see where these may meet our academic and graduation requirements.

A student with diagnosed learning needs or with a medical condition which prevents them from accessing the programme fully will receive special consideration for graduation requirements at the discretion of the Head of School.

Loco parentis

In normal circumstances a student will be residing with their parents. Only if there is full agreement with the Head of School will a guardian be accepted. If the school is not satisfied with the efficacy of the guardian, re-enrolment will not be offered by the school.
