Challenges to Evolve
Our journey towards becoming an anti-racist and socially equitable school has been marked by intentional and reflective practices, designed to address and overcome significant challenges. We initiated comprehensive professional development programs that emphasize self-awareness, knowledge, and understanding. Utilizing tools such as the Identity Wheel, Teacher Surveys, and the Implicit Bias Test, we aimed to unpack and internalize DEIBJ concepts. This process has not been without its difficulties; it required building trust within our community and fostering open, honest conversations about the presence of oppression within our school. Identifying and dismantling implicit biases in our curriculum and assessments has been a critical component of our efforts.
We faced the challenge of recognizing where our curriculum lacked representation of diverse perspectives and worked diligently to advocate for fair inclusion of all voices. Addressing these biases has been a transformative process, requiring patience, perseverance, and a willingness to confront uncomfortable truths. Our goal is to continually challenge ourselves and evolve in our understanding of diverse cultures, languages, orientations, abilities, and socioeconomic backgrounds. By embracing discomfort and promoting cultural humility, we strive to create a truly equitable learning environment. Our commitment to DEIBJ principles is unwavering, as we work towards a future where every member of our community feels valued and included.
