The OSC Science Department believes that:

  • The Sciences and their methods of investigation offer a way of learning through inquiry, this contributes to the development of an analytical and critical way of thinking.
  • The Sciences should encourage the development of not only the Scientific Method but also transferable thinking skills that enable students to investigate the natural world.
  • Students should develop an understanding of how science and scientists work in the real world. This understanding of how one thinks and acts in the manner of a scientist is best achieved through in-depth scientific investigations.
  • Students who possess a relevant understanding of scientific concepts, skills, and theories will be able to apply them appropriately to new and unfamiliar situations.
Facilities

To best facilitate inquiry through Science, OSC students have access to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities:

  • The four science laboratories offer a dynamic learning and physical environment that inspires student collaboration, enhances multimedia presentations and maintains student safety.
  • The science laboratories are fully equipped to facilitate investigations in Biology, Physics, Chemistry and the Environmental Sciences.
  • The science laboratories are equipped with multimedia projectors, larger screens and wireless technology to further promote visual and virtual learning.
  • The OSC students have opportunities to use advanced data-loggers and data processing software. This high quality equipment allows students to use technology in Science.
  • Each laboratory is supported by a certified Science Technician. The OSC Science Technicians assist teachers in preparing quality science investigations, help maintain safety and aid IB Diploma students with independent research projects.
