OSC’s Mission is to develop the whole person as a responsible learner striving for personal excellence within a culturally diverse school. To support the Mission, in April 2009 the Board adopted a set of strategic policies to guide the Board’s decision-making, as follows:

  • The School will recruit and retain international and local staff members who passionately support, promote, and apply the mission of the school.
  • The School will design, review and assess its educational programme so as to promote high achievement for all students as expressed in the School’s mission.
  • The School’s social and physical environment will be supportive of the mission.
  • Students will be accepted without discrimination on the basis of sex, religion, race or nationality.
  • Resource allocation will optimise student learning and fulfillment of the School mission.

The Board of Directors, supported by School Management, undertook a strategic planning exercise during the 2009-10 school year. The Strategic Plan builds on the recommendations of the newly completed ten-yearly accreditation by OSC’s accrediting agencies and the International Baccalaureate. It also draws on the collective inputs and desires of the entire school community including parents, students and staff who were consulted through several dedicated sessions in November and December 2009.

It is the Board’s expectation that the Strategic Plan will help OSC further build on its existing strengths; that it will provide the impetus for the School to continue its focus on achieving its mission, and that it will help the School to further grow its enrolment in line with the school’s Marketing Plan, which is being prepared in parallel to the Strategic Plan.

To best support the School's Mission, the Strategic Plan is build around three pillars:

  • Teaching and learning Recognising that effective student teaching and learning is at the heart of all that we do as a school, the first pillar of the plan addresses our academic programme and its implementation, student support services, the extra-curricular programme, and the hiring, development and maintenance of a dynamic, effective teaching staff. The aim is that OSC will be continue to be the premier international school in Colombo, with outstanding teaching and learning occurring in all aspects of its programme.
  • Social Environment A positive social environment improves student contentment and therefore learning. Moreover, as “word travels” a good social environment is a critical factor in making OSC known and attractive. Finally, strong interaction and cohesion among school families will also help OSC become a dynamic centre of community life for its students and their families.
  • Facilities The School has made major investments in its facilities in recent years, and does not foresee additional major building projects at this time. As there is current room for expanding enrolment within existing facilities, the emphasis will be on selected upgrading as needed, and to ensure that the facilities remain supporting for learning, well maintained, inviting and safe.
